a poetry walk & workshop with Dr Briony Hughes

Join ecopoet and lecturer Dr Briony Hughes on a creative journey through Royal Holloway’s Living Campus. This guided nature work and writing workshop invites you to explore the university’s woodland, meadows, and watercourses though the mediums of poetry and art.
We will engage in unique and hands-on writing exercises whilst paying close attention to the textures of plant species, the rhythms of birdsong, and the movements of invertebrates and freshwater systems.

The workshop is suitable for both experienced writers and complete beginners. By the end of the session, you’ll have discovered new ways to connect with the natural world, experimented with different approaches to writing, and drafted a series of original ecopoems.
Meet in Founders Square at 17:45. Here is a link to a map of the campus.
Distance: Approx 1.25 km, depending on route taken.
What to Bring:
- Notebook and pen/pencil – for jotting down thoughts, reflections, and responses to writing activities.
- Camera or smartphone – optional, but you might enjoy capturing the scenery.
- Water bottle – there are refill stations on campus, though not in the outdoor areas.
Weather & What to Wear:
- In warm weather:
Parts of the event will take place in full sun. Bring plenty of water, and consider wearing sunscreen, a hat, and light, breathable clothing. - In case of rain:
A waterproof jacket and suitable clothing are recommended. - Extreme weather:
For safety reasons, the workshop may be postponed or cancelled in the case of severe weather. We’ll notify attendees in advance if this happens. - Footwear & clothing:
Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain, including steps and gentle slopes.
As we’ll visit the campus meadow, long sleeves and trousers are advised to reduce the risk of ticks.
Accessibility:
We aim to make ‘The Woodland Writer’s Studio’ welcoming and inclusive for all participants. Here’s what you should know:
- While some woodland paths include uneven surfaces, steps, and slopes, alternative accessible routes are available.
Please contact us at least 48 hours before the event if you have mobility needs so we can plan accordingly. - Some woodland areas have dense tree cover, which may present visibility challenges. If you are visually impaired and would like to discuss the route, we’d love to hear from you.
- The workshop is sensory-friendly and designed to support neurodiverse participants. If you think you may benefit from extra breaks or other adjustments, let us know when booking.
- Families are welcome – children aged 11+ can attend with a responsible adult (under 16s must be accompanied).
