This workshop blends traditional craftsmanship with sustainability and cultural heritage, encouraging participants to explore eco-friendly practices through the art of papermaking and Chinese calligraphy. This hands-on experience highlights the transformation of discarded materials into art, drawing on both contemporary environmental themes and the rich cultural history of words and language.

The workshop will be led by Huaiyuan (Robert) Ren and Chenyi (Cher) Liu. Cher is a professional embroidery artist and a tutor in training for the Royal School of Needlework. She has practised Chinese and European traditional and modern embroidery, while engaging with community art and making embroidery accessible for all. Robert is a researcher in art history and a curator who has worked on projects across China and the UK. He is also the Student and Emerging Professionals Representative of ICOM UK, setting up international workshops and conferences to explore cross-cultural and inter-disciplinary collaborations. Their interest in paper making arose from looking for creative ways to recycle the paper on which traditional Chinese calligraphy was practised.
